Moving Complete & Kitty

December 6th, 2007 by Camille

We finished moving into our new house. I still can’t believe that we’re in a house again since we lived in an apartment for 1 1/2 years now. My parents did a wonderful job coming up with this house. I forgot to mention in the other posts that that my parents own a building company called Insteel Homes. My father named it that since he was going to build houses with steel but since some lovely steel company ripped us off, he decided to just do it with wood. The name stuck but they are going to change it…sooner or later.

My room is large and so is the living room downstairs which echoes whenever you talk. I’ll take pictures or show you guys with our camcorder after we get everything organized since there are still some things to put up. My mother and I put up the tree while I did the fireplace and, I have to say, I did a good job.

We’re going to go to Garden Ridge probably this weekend to get us new decorations and a star since we don’t know where our old one is. We aren’t going to put up ornament on the tree since it looks fine with just lights - which are already on there.

Now, as for the kitten. My father and I went last Saturday to the SCPA after buying the supplies we needed for the kitty we were going to adopt. It was raining that day and the shoes I wore got wet because of it’s sponge-like cushion since I have a wart on my left foot when we walked out of Walmart.

The people at the animal shelter were extremely nice and the kittens…all of them were so adorable that I told my father that I wanted them all. They were mewing for attention and went to the door when I neared them. I did visit one adult cat and she was a very sweet one but I wanted a kitten.

Since the felines were in kennels, we were able to go in as long as you used the hand sanitizer. The first one had one female and the other two were males. They were very active but I didn’t think of picking them up since I wanted to just pet them. The next one had three males. One was active, one was laying in the bed while the other didn’t want me to pet him. I respected his space and decided to check out the other kittens.

The next one had two females and one male while the next one was all females. So, we went back to the other room. I wanted to pick up the black and white one that was laying in the bed before but he didn’t like it. I went into the first one and they practically loved me to pick them up.

One male was named Toby and he is a Tabby. He has a syndrome that makes him think that hands are toys but isn’t that for every cat? The other two were actually siblings. They were mixed. Their coat pattern was bi-colored like number six here while the spots themselves were grey with a bit of black. The female, Joon, had some calico in her while her brother, Benny had none. I picked up Toby but he didn’t like it. I picked up Benny and that’s when I made my decision.

Benny let me hold him up in my arms while I scratched the base of his tail, his back and the top of his head behind the ears. He started to close his eyes as well and that’s when one of the staff members came in. She asked me if that’s the one I wanted and I said yes. I just continued to pet him and stayed in the kennel since I wanted to spend more time with him before she handed us the application.

This is when my father and I learned that declawing is a very, very, painful process. We thought that it meant that they only trimmed the claws - which is perfectly fine. Declawing a cat is like cutting off the top part of our fingers and that made me wince. My father and I told them that we wouldn’t do that. She also gave us helpful tips on what to keep cats from scratching furniture by buying double sticky tape or special mats.

When I was done with the application, she told us that someone will call us on Monday to talk about my application. My dad asked me if I wanted to go and I only smirked at him before telling him that I wanted to play with the kittens a little bit. Toby, Joon, and Benny were very fun to play with. I played “paw the hand” with Benny while Joon played with a tag on my shoes that was sticking out. I couldn’t help but laugh at her while Toby pawed at my hair.

Toby and Joon soon joined in to try and catch my hand and it was quite fun to move my hands away before they could claw or bite it. This practically went on before my father decided that it was time to go - as much as I hated to. I gave the three kittens a scratch behind the ears and gave Benny a kiss on his head before coming out of their kennel and locked it with the latch.

My father asked me, “Ready to go now?” I couldn’t help but say, “Not really. Can I stay?” My father, as well as the staff member, laughed at me while I just smiled.

Monday came ever so slowly and since I didn’t remember my two friend’s phone numbers for reference, I gave them to the lady and she said she would call the next day or the day after. Next day came. Nothing and I became impatient. It’s a horrible, horrible, habit of mine that annoys me greatly that I wanted to go to the bookstore to buy three books. My father came with me since he had to get the cable for my car first and then drove to the bookstore. Barnes and Nobles. I love that place. We had a coupon too and I was glad that my mother said that I could use it since it was sent for her.

I drove back home and talked to my father about the kitty once again. Wednesday came and my father came into my room right when I woke up that my application was accepted. I flew up and said, “Really?!” He told me that we were going to get him on Saturday. This made me sad since they were opened on Fridays. I found out today (it’s Thursday) that they stayed open until 7pm on Mondays and Fridays and since my mother would be off work, she could take me if my father wouldn’t be able to come home on time.

My father didn’t know that and said that he would call them in the morning the next day to see if they could change it. I’m sure they would allow it since they’re really nice people and, of course, loves animals. Since I was so impatient, I went out today and bought The Sims 2 University and Pets once more since my friend in Allen has them and I decided that she could keep them. I made Benny and Joon on it along with myself and one of my friends on it. I played it until I got bored of it and started to write this to pass the time since I can’t go to sleep until 12 or 1 in the morning these days. I can get up earlier too since I got used to sleeping earlier from not having my computer and Internet access for three days - which is fine since TV kept me busy as well spending time with my parents.

I hope they will allow us to come to pick him up today rather than tomorrow at 1pm. Oh, and I will wear my converses instead of these house shoes since my mom bought me special cushions for warts so that it wouldn’t hurt when I walk on it. I wore them today while going to Target and I didn’t feel a thing. Wonderful inventions.

As for the kitten’s name, I think I will stick with Benny since it fits him and I can’t think of any other name for him that fits.
