New Zealand v Tonga Review – 2019 RWC Warm-Ups

Posted on November 29, 2019 by admin

So the All Blacks absolutely smashed the Tongans 92 – 7. Everything worked from start to finish. 14 amazing tries scored from everywhere over the park. Is this a sign of things to come at the RWC.
Bring on the first game Springboks v All Blacks it is going to be epic.

All blacks running Rugby best in the world at it. There skill set under pressure foot-work ability to assess the options almost on instinctive thoughts no team even close to them. If the all blacks show up with there game face on good luck too any team in the world trying to defeat them. You will need it.

IMO few positives for either team. Not even any world ranking points for the ABs big win, just no injuries…. I presume the point was, like last wks games in NZ, (Samoan v Heartland XV and Tonga v Fiji) to fill the Pacifica's coffers. This was done in 2002 to help finance Fiji RWC 2003, the Fiji v AB game in Wellington 2002 was considered a home game for Fiji so the ticket sales went to the Fiji Union, (about 37k ppl, cheapest ticket $120 each is $4.5million minus costs).
Ben Smith looked good, he has not been the player of old since 2017 injuries, but is the only experienced outside back (50+ caps). If the issue is confidence not a nagging injury then things are looking better.
I still think the ABs are a bit off the pace, they have had only one truly dominant victory in the last 2yrs (2019 Bledisloe-2 but this on the rebound). My current picks to win RWC are 1). SAF, 2). England, 3). ABs, with several others close. I hope to be proved wrong.

its easy to sort out this diff between tier one and two is have the asshole european clubs realease the players alot earlier than they do to give players better game time together and the rfu pay for their flights home for a start the island unions suck plus officiate where the money goes to from the rfu better than they do samoa and tonga and fiji have been in the top ten rankings b4 are they really tier two nations or just tier ones that slip under the bootlaces of greed and mismanagement

What the f!@#$ Tongan rugby is moving nowhere the last time all blacks vs Tonga it was 47 to 9 now 4 years after its 92 to 7 omg what happened to preparation for the last 4 years to compete at the RWC 2019 the only thing I can see that thy improve on is qualifier for the RWC and a try to the all blacks anyway that is just my opinion good luck on the RWC Tonga ✊

The word "BULLYING" comes to mind.

World Rugby needs to address the difference between Tier 1 and 2 urgently.

A good starting point would be their eligibility rules which is heavily in favour for Tier 1.

Thankyou for your astute review. Interesting that the A.B's chose to complete the game with 14 players.. Good luck for the cup.

If you listen to Hansen he said the score isn't important its their structure and their running game into space that was important.

NZ looking good. They are totally ruthless in this game, looked amazing. Tighter defensive sides in the World Cup, may need to now re-think their structures to cope with NZ, because it does appear they have somehow, just taken a step ahead of the others again?.

Pretty much live training, is what the AB's got out of it. Could of been 100 plus but Hansen voluntarily went down to 14 men. Josh Ioane was impressive, shame he's not at the RWC.

tbh not the best warm up for us. Tonga didn't rush up on defence no where as much as top tier teams will.
