10 presidential candidates were on the Coe College Campus in Cedar Rapids Friday to talk LGBTQ rights at the LGBTQ Presidential Forum, cosponsored by The Gazette, along with organizations such as One Iowa and GLAAD.
The livestream of the forum can be found here:
Some of our coverage can be found here:
While the forum was the first of the cycle to focus on exclusively LGBTQ issues, we talked with some of the candidates about some of the other issues on their minds as well. With South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, our editorial writers Adam Sullivan and Todd Dorman talked about the need for congress to hold the administration accountable, the importance of infrastructure on water quality, the role of a Buttigieg administration in disaster response in the wake of climate change, and his views on the role of federal government helping municipalities on helping policing and racial justice, among other issues.

Anyone that listens to this highly intelligent person and does not see a thoughtful, competent man that can lead us into the next decade; should first look at his other speeches, check out his policies at pete20/20 and you will realize he is the person to lead our country out of the mess we are in and into the the place we should be that has been lost over the last 3 years. Seriously think twice before voting for anyone else. Someone wants to go into homes and take weapons. That is no solution. Someone is offering us a raffle for money. Nice, but what does that even mean or do for us? ‘One wants to take away private insurance, giving us no choice. Is that even an option? Some are so old, and although well intentioned, are not going to give us leadership for hopefully the next 8 years. We need to do something now. Listen to his concern and careful thinking, and vote for him for 20/20. You won’t be sorry.
Here's the candidate with focus on the big picture. He cares more about defeating Trump, forcing the Republican Party to reset, and healing our democracy than he does about taking power and feeding his ego. So many of the candidates are saying what their base wants to hear but aren't keeping reality and the rest of the country in mind when they open their mouths. Pete always has a smart, practical, progressive answer that focuses on hope and unity. And as much as he is aware of the big picture, he also knows and can extemporaneously speak clearly about the small details. He is the leader that the Democratic Party needs…that this country needs.
I have yet to hear Pete Buttigieg stumble when being asked a question. It's always a clear knowledgeable answer.
