Review: She Sees Red (Steam) – Defunct Games

Posted on September 27, 2019 by admin

Defunct Games reviews She Sees Red by Rhinotales, available now on PC and Mac.
As a short film, She Sees Red is an impressive thriller full of twists and excitement. But as a game, this debut release from Rhinotale falls short. With only a few choices to make and nothing in the way of puzzles or interactivity, this is a mostly visual affair from beginning to end. The good news is that the Russian crime story is instantly compelling and leads to a fun roller coaster ride, but there may not be enough here for most gamers to latch on to, even with the relatively cheap $8 asking price. There’s a solid thriller to discover, but compared to other interactive movies, She Sees Red comes up short in more ways than one.

Qotd – dont have one. I never had a Sega CD or a 3do so I never got into that sort of game. Plus, they always seemed like poor excuses for a game. Now that ive aged and dont have to have a zillion things to do at once in a game, they actually seem to be a cool novelty.
This game doesnt sound like much of a "game", however, for 8 bucks it could be classified as an experience that is a bit movie, a bit game, a bit visual novel. Heck, a lot of those "interactive novels" on Vita arent much of a game either, but people buy them. So I guess it is a niche with an itch.

Great review, Cyril. But I'm gunna pass on this. I need a little more interactivity with my games.

Russian, but I didn't see any bears!

This looks interesting. Kind of cool seeing others taking a stab at this after telltale ran dry.

QOTD: Favorite FMV game? Probably Night Trap with D right next to it. Night Trap was a perfect bland of campiness, cool premise, actual interactivity (though limited) and went all in with the actors treat you like the operator instead of the audience.

Rebel Assault 1, loved it as a kid. Not sure how I would like it nowadays though, between the gameplay and the fact that I couldn't care less about star wars.

I may give this a shot though, mostly out of curiosity. As for the question, it's a toss up, I do like Night Trap and Phantasmagoria for the cheesiness, and The Shapeshifting Detective though a short game, kinda hoping maybe for a sequel some day, I enjoyed it so much.

I liked a couple of FMV games on Sega CD back in the day like Cobra Command and Sewer Shark but Mad Dog McCree 2 on 3DO was my favourite.

These modern FMV games are actually pretty impressive, and usually priced right for the experience IMHO.
